saw jojo at drummer live yesterday - he was incredible - sooo inspiring. great touch and sound and a great drum show presentation, no drum solo but good music. beautiful brush playing too - original - he said it was a lost art which is true - but he killed on the brushes.
virgil was cool too, very powerful. and benny greb opened the show and was great i thought - much better than any of the internet vids - had cool tracks from his new album and playing really great - very inventive.

Thanks Donu! There really isn't that much footage of Jojo out there. Atleast not as much as there should be! I spook to him a few months ago, and he said that he would be releasing an instructional DVD on technique some time soon. Looking forward to that!
His chops KILL me. His musical choices and his feel are what prevent him from being in the mainstream of music. He's another drummer that doesn't do it for me in the feel dept. I guess he does OK doing fusion drum and bass gigs, and clinics.
I agree Port. What's important here though is that Jojo's playing is supposed to sound mechanical and "machine-like", since he is appyling computer generated sound to a drum set. Obviously, there's not much room for feel there. It's about creating raw, aggressive beats, nothing more. I wish you guys could have seen him playing in a trio setting known as "Depart". There was "feel" written all over his kit that evening [img]smile.gif[/img]
AAARRGHH!! i love it ! that last vid was great. the 1st and last tunes were included in his set the other day - i like them a lot. he has such style!!

No feel?! Are you kidding me?
I play drum'n'bass as my main gig, and believe me, the majority of drummers in this area don't play with the feel Jojo gets. Its so hard to flow at 180bpm - he plays so loose, so relaxed most of the time. I don't think you'll hear those kinds of grooves played with significantly more feel by anyone - its too specialist an area for people to just play it easily from the off.
There are so many pauses and drops that are counter-intuitive - Jojo has it nailed, he really does.
Muskateer has a point. When comparing drummers solely in this genre, I don't think you'll come across a drummer that makes more use of different dynamics/sound textures. Without a high degree of "feel" (definitions of this term vary from person to person) this isn't possible.
